Major 1 on your petition should be the major you want listed first on your transcript and diploma.
International students intending to apply for CPT or OPT should choose major 1 as the field they are interested in pursuing employment.
Students must satisfy all requirements for BOTH majors.
Courses taken in fulfillment of lower-division requirements may overlap without limit.
10 upper-division courses (40 units) must be unique to each major.
Do not list more courses than the number actually required for the major.
Write a Statement of Purpose. Your statement should be 100-300 words and address why you want to double major, and why you've selected the specific majors you have chosen. In your statement, please discuss how these specific majors address your interests and career goals.
Prepare an Academic Planning Worksheet. You can link to a copy of a Google Sheet or send in PDF format. PDF is preferred when sending to us (Econ).
List all requirements for both majors as well as College and university requirements.
List all courses, including those you have completed, in progress, and planned for future quarters.
Submit
Submit the Double Major Petition, Statement of Purpose, and Academic Planning Worksheet to your primary major first. After your primary major signs your Petition and Worksheet, please send everything to the Economics Department by email ateconugadvisor@ucsd.edu. (If your primary major is in the Economics Department, send everything to Econ first.)
Please do not send your materials to both major departments simultaneously. This usually causes confusion and results in you having to restart the process again for all signatures.
Please allow the Econ Department at least 5 to 10 business days for processing. We will reply to you via VAC with your approved or denied petition.
If approved by both departments, submit all documents to your college academic advising office for final review. After your College approves, they will submit the form officially to the Office of the Registrar for processing. Approximately one week later, you should view your Academic History to confirm that both majors appear.
