Double Majors
About Double Majors
- REVEW THIS PAGE
- Only continuing students may declare a double major after they have a minimum 2.0 UC GPA and are in Good Standing.
- Joint Mathematics and Economics majors (MA33 or EN28) cannot double major with any other majors in Mathematics or Economics.
- International Studies - Economics majors cannot double major with our Econ majors (both EN25 and EN31) or Management Science major (EN26). (See here.)
- International Studies - Business majors can double major with our Business Econ major (EN30). (See here.)
Prepare Your Materials
- Write a Statement of Purpose. Your statement should be 100-300 words and address why you want to double major, and why you've selected the specific majors you have chosen. In your statement, please discuss how these specific majors address your interests and career goals.
- Prepare an Academic Planning Worksheet. You can link to a copy of a Google Sheet or send in PDF format. PDF is preferred when sending to us (Econ).
- List all requirements for both majors as well as College and university requirements.
- List all courses, including those you have completed, in progress, and planned for future quarters.
- Download the Double Major Petition and complete all fields. Need an example? See here.
- Major 1 on your petition should be the major you want listed first on your transcript and diploma.
- International students intending to apply for CPT or OPT should choose major 1 as the field they are interested in pursuing employment.
- Students must satisfy all requirements for BOTH majors.
- Courses taken in fulfillment of lower-division requirements may overlap without limit.
- 10 upper-division courses (40 units) must be unique to each major.
- Do not list more courses than the number actually required for the major. Do not include Honors courses.
- Each course must be a 4 unit course. (2 unit courses are not accepted.)
- If you are using Math courses for either of your majors, please note the following Math equivalencies per the general catalog for Econ and Math:
Econ 120B = Math 181B. Credit not allowed for ECON 120B after MATH 181B. Two units of credit offered for MATH 181B if ECON 120B previously; no credit offered if ECON 120B concurrently.
Econ 172A = Math 171A. Credit not allowed for both ECON 172A and MATH 171A.
Econ 172B = Math 171B. Credit not allowed for both ECON 172B and MATH 171B.
Submit
- Submit the Double Major Petition, Statement of Purpose, and Academic Planning Worksheet to your primary major first. After your primary major signs your Petition and Worksheet, please send everything to the Economics Department by email at econugadvisor@ucsd.edu. (If your primary major is in the Economics Department, send everything to Econ first.)
- Please do not send your materials to both major departments simultaneously. This usually causes confusion and results in you having to restart the process again for all signatures.
- Please allow the Econ Department at least 5 to 10 business days for processing. We will reply to you via VAC with your approved or denied petition.
- If approved by both departments, submit all documents to your college academic advising office for final review. After your College approves, they will submit the form officially to the Office of the Registrar for processing. Approximately one week later, you should view your Academic History to confirm that both majors appear.
